James Webb

Telescope

Launch

I had the opportunity to work on the Webby award winning James Webb Telescope Launch. I worked with my animation team to develop graphics for explaining the deployment of the craft after launch and worked behind the camera on set. It was a thrilling Christmas seeing all my hard-work come to fruition.

in addition to my work on the 3D model, I worked with my team to create other video production assets that were sprinkled throughout the live stream. These assets had many variants that were compiled into an Asset Library that I organized and setup on our cloud servers for easy access even when on NASA’s secure network.

Large fullscreen backgrounds were created that showed digital renderings of celestial nebulas. The looped videos were color graded for different scenes and moods.

Lower Third title cards were an important factor in the livestream. I had a hand in creating these by aiding one of my colleagues in iterating on different ideas for how to utilize the hexagonal shapes that permeated throughout the branding of JWST.

The fast paced environment of working on a video production team meant the design was changed and the design asks were given very little turnaround, I had three days from when the model was requested to deliver it and I felt if I had more time I could really flesh out a more accurate model. Regardless I’m happy with the results of my work and happy to be able to be a part of a huge milestone in science.
