S.T.O.R.M

Logo

The Solar-Terrestrial Observer for the Response of the Magnetosphere team, is a mouthful. It is also a mission to study and monitor the Sun’s solar weather! The team in charge of the mission needed an intro for their mission proposal videos that was snappier than the previous iteration. As the lead motion designer reporting to the producers, I met with the scientists in charge to iterate and gather relevant data, creating an intro that was as dynamic as the solar storms that showed viewers some of the way’s the sun is measured.

Rough Iteration

Storyboarding the animation involved working off of an existing logo. One idea was to have the magnetic fields bloom out of Earth. The second idea that we ended up following had invisible particles interacting and “wind socking” the magnetosphere.

First Pass

Challenges:

After the first pass at the logo animation, the client and project manager wanted something more dynamic that encapsulated the idea of how all encompassing the magnetosphere is. We also were getting some comments from the client about wanting to smooth out some of the transitions in the animation so I had to consider how to make it both “smooth” and “dynamic”.

Final

The final result was a exquisite blend of the comments the client had as well as my research and discussion with the producers on how the magnetosphere could be represented. The branding push for a more dynamic logo was achieved and could be the launching point for more of a brand expansion later on.
